I agree with the student summary that the source reliable because it is from a trusted organization. I really like that the site breaks down identity into personal, cultural, and ethnic parts. I found this site helpful. I normally wouldn't think to look for this sort of information from the Dept of Child Safety.

This source was helpful because it provided a good definition of identity. It is reliable because it comes from Princeton, an Ivy League school.

Definitions #1 and #2 are interesting.
1. what identifies somebody or something: the name or essential character that identifies somebody or something 2. essential self: the set of characteristics that somebody recognizes as belonging uniquely to himself or herself and constituting his or her individual personality for life
#1 has the potential for harm, as was the case in slavery during the antebellum era. People are sometimes pointed out for one “outstanding” and/or stereotypical characteristic. Other times, as was the case for slave owners, one outstanding characteristic can overshadow the wrongs of fault, err, and weakness. Identity can help as much as it can harm. I think this helpful to keep in mind when considering identity within literature.
Although the site is Microsoft Encarta, it is limited because the definitions are not used in examples. There are also few links and citations. This reduces the credibility.

I like how this site uses a wide range of definitions, and applies them with examples. I think it is credible because it won awards and names sources like Merriam-Webster and Roget. I found #2 of the first definition the most applicable to literature. Collectively, the definitions imply that identity is a matter of finding similarity or difference in yourself with another person or group. I think this definition of identity may help an understanding of diversity. How accepting and/or embracing are people of diversity, and how does it affect their identity? I can see this question applied to such eras as the Civil War.

This source improved my knowledge of the issues attributed to forming one's identity. This source is credible because it's authors are clearly stated and it was found on an esteemed database.

This source really looks at the formation of American identity and how living in a democracy influences our identities. This source is credible because it states its author clearly and was published in a government journal.

This resource has some detail but not as much as I would like to see. But does a very good job defining identity and helps me better understand it in the context of American Literature and what makes something unique. CRedible resource.

This resource explains what distinctly identifies something as unique. Specifically it talks about cultural identity and what classifies someone as part of one culture as opposed to another kind. This is very useful and credible in understanding identity.

This was a great resource that showed an interesting aspect of identity, the American Identity. I particularly liked how it stated that American Identity ‘came out of the forests and gained new strength each time it touched a frontier’. It provides a very good point that identity is not something that is only for certain people and that there is only one type. It shows that identity is something that people take on and make their own.

I had never thought about using a video as one of my resources, but this really did provide very useful visual information. I like how its purpose was to show how society shapes our lives as well as our futures. It shows such good examples on how our identities are influenced by everything around us like TV shows, public speakers and tragic events to name a few. However, I do not think that it was properly cited.

18. "Cultural identity." Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. 7 May 2009, 03:05 UTC. 7 May 2009 <http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cultural_identity&oldid=288402306>.
The main purpose of this website is to provide the readers with the description of cultural identity. There was not much information on this website, so its help was limited. It did however define the term and give a description. It is credible as it cites from other sources but for more information I would check out the external links and further readings.

Although this site was helpful, I wish it had more direct at identity. It was based on human behavior, and yes that can tie into identity, but it didn't help my understanding of the subject.

This site was useful because they didn't define identity through one person for an example or sometime.. they simply defined it making it easier for me to understand.

this source is more on American Identity and it was difficult to find where it began to discuss identity. I don't think this is a resource that would be good to use for our specific assignment, but more for studying America and its culture.

This is more of a resource on American Identity, rather than identity in general. But it is an excellent resource on American Identity. I would use this source to begin a comprehensive examination of American literature in order to determine what American identity means and how it may be seen in texts.

This site had a religious interest when describing identity. I think that the principles applied to determining a religious identity would also apply to identity in general. The page gives an overview of essays examining identity, but it would be helpful to have had additional information there rather than having to search for it within the site.

This resource focues more on the American Idenity rather than identity in self. I thought it was interesting but felt it needed to go more indepth on identity and how each of us has a seperat identity. According to this website the American identity can be classified as freedom, individualism, mobility, and pragmatism. This part did start out by saying that American's are idividual but I wanted more in depth explanation on how.

This resource focused on identity in culture and how literature plays a role. I thought this website was a great resource to find information on identity in literature. My source was more driven toward idenity in the sense of religion which worked for me because of the time period I was working on was the Englightenment which main focus is religion. This resource said that cultural idenity refers to the feelings of belonging which was a great definition.

12: This source discusses the theme of identity as it relates to Philosophy. I found this information both interesting and valuable, as identity is certainly more than a theme in literature, but something we spend much of our lives hoping to achieve. This source has a lot of valuable information, and it discusses identity in depth as it applies to our real lives.
16: I love that this site discusses the American identity, the identity of our country. It talks about American values and ideals as they relate directly to our nation's identity. However, this site does not define identity, and doesnt explain much of how these beliefs relate to the overall identity of the citizens.
