As president of one of the worst times in history The Boston Massacre, there must have been great pressure to lead in such disasterous times, but he did persevere and was one of our great presidents of all times.

This source provides information on the meaning of the term "The American Dream", the origin of the term, and an analysis of what the American Dream actually is. The source has a works cited at the end, so it seems reliable to me.

Has anyone started updated their period pages? There are no members of my group to help update the Critique of Slavery page. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks! Jamie |

Hello my name is Jessica and the reason that I am taking this class is because it is a class that caught my attention and that I need for my degree. I took this class particularly because it looked interesting and it was flexible around my work schedule. I hope to learn more about authors that I never had the opportunity to learn about and to gain a better understanding of the time periods that they were involved with. I expect to do my best at learning all I can about the subject matter that is presented and then to also be able to retain the information for later use.

Hi, my name is Amanda Martinez and I will be a senior at Arizona State University this fall. I’m taking this class because it fulfills a requirement for my major of English Literature. I’m taking this particular class over another that fulfills the same requirements, because I prefer American literature to British Literature, which was my other option. From this class I would like to learn about the different authors that fall within the particular time periods we will be studying. I also want to learn how to use technologies I am unfamiliar with, such as Timerime and Wetpaint Wiki because I believe it is a huge advantage to be well rounded with technology. Along with the authors, I expect to learn a lot about the various literary periods of American literature pre-1860. I’m vaguely familiar with those listed on the website, but expect to learn much more in depth regarding the different periods.

I am currently a senior at Arizona State University in the College of Education. I am majoring in Secondary Education with a content specialization of English. I believe that once I graduate I would like to find a job teaching at the high school level.
I am taking this course because it is required for my major. I am required to complete 37 core English classes and this is one of the listed requirements on my graduation check sheet. I chose to take this particular course so that I would be available to complete my upper division courses during the regular semester. As for why I chose to take an online class that happened because since I have a young son that has to be picked up from daycare at a specified time. Since I am forced to work my class schedule around my son I have found that during the summer semesters online classes is the best choice for me. The only expectation that I have about this course is to cover some interesting material that I normally would not know about. I excited about the way this course is set up since it will give me a personal viewpoint on the advantages as well as the disadvantages of incorporating technology when I have my own classroom to teach. While I have learned about many of the sites we will be utilizing in the course I have not yet taken a course where technology is so heavily incorporated so I think that it will be an interesting experience for me.

I am taking this class because I am required to take it in order to fulfill my requirements for my major in Secondary Education. The reason I am taking this course over other humanities classes is because I was curious about the class title, American Literature Before 1860. I was actually curious about what the literature in and before the 1860's was like. What I would like to learn from this class is the authors that contributed to this specific time period. What they were like, what they were going through, what inspired them to write what they did, etc.. I expect to get a lot out of this class as far as information and be given direction as to how to apply what I learn about this time period and the literature it involved into other aspects of my education process.

This is an interesting site. It provides a series of comments and summaries of Memoranda by various people. I never knew what this text was about until I read this. After finding out that it reaccounts the war as quoted by his hospital books, I want to pick up the book and read it.

I love this site. I like the way it is set up and the information it provides. I like how it describes Throeau in the beginning, his two famous pieces, his reasoning and inspiration behind Civil Disobedience and information on Throeau the man. Throeau was inspired to write Civil Disobedience after being imprisoned for a night for not paying taxes because he condemned slavery.

This was a great website. I learned a lot of information I did not know before. For instance, I never knew Thoreau wrote his book while at Walden pond. One of my favorite Thoreau facts is that his text Civil Disobedience inspired Gandhi and MLK jr. This is a credible university website.

I liked this website because of how it is set up. The set up of the website made it easier to read and understand the concept of transcendentalism. I also like how there are links for other website which provide more information on topics related to the movement. This is a credible university website.

I liked this website because of the way it opened up. I will admit that doing the packets I never really understood what transcendentalism is so the introduction pulled me in. I like how Lewis offered various ways to look and define transcendentalists such as a group of well education people and a group who were trying to define spirituality and religion. I learned a lot of information and understand the concept more.

This is a very great website that broadened my knowledge on the text. It provides a summary of the narrative with passages from the text. It also provides a comparison and contrast of the first and second autobiography. This is a credible university website from the University of North Carolina.

If you go through each link listed at the bottom of the page, this is a very informative website. It provides a ton of information from Douglas' slave years, to the beginning of his life as an abolitionist and his involvement in the civil war. I do not know if this site is credible or not because I can not determine where the site is from.

This was an informative essay that broadened my knowledge of Jacob's and her text. I like how this essay stressed the importance of the fact that Jacobs was literate throughout her lifetime and how it aided her through her life's journey as a slave, her life in hiding and her life as she went free.

This website increased my knowledge on Harriet Tubman. Having studied African American history I already know information about her general life and abolitionist activities but there was some stuff I did not know. For instance, there was a part in the website that discussed how Tubman's capture would have brought 40,000 to the South and when two men were reading her wanted poster it said she was illiterate. So to not get caught she pulled out a book and started reading. It fooled the men. This is a credible website.
